Networking Applications of Discrete Event Systems

The tremendous growth in demand for broadband access to the Internet and value-added network services is driving the creation of new and advanced networking equipment at a rapid pace. This equipment will use emerging network processors (network-specific programmable asymmetric multiprocessors on a single chip) in parallel distributed architectures to support ten-fold increases in each of bandwidth and service functionality over the next three years. In order to keep pace with market demand and semiconductor advances, network equipment manufacturers are groping for a new system development methodology and supporting software environment that enables them to develop robust and high-performance solutions rapidly and to leverage these solutions through reuse across multiple products and product generations.

Discrete event systems theory can be used to pioneer an innovative solution for next-generation networking applications. Real-time and hybrid state machines provide a rich conceptual model for capturing networking system designs, with formal tools support for design, verification, testing and code generation, and distributed operating system support for scalable, reliable, high-performance execution.

The talk will introduce the problem domain in the context of specific broadband Internet access infrastructure equipment, present the framework developed by Teja to address such problems, and demonstrate specific solution case studies to illustrate the applicability of the approach.


Dr. Akash Deshpande is the founder and chief technology officer of Teja Technologies, Inc., a silicon valley networking starup. Previously he was senior engineer at Teknekron Communication Systems, Berkeley, and software engineer with AT&T Paradyne. After completing his doctoral studies in EECS at UC-Berkeley, he worked as a lecturer and research engineer at UC-Berkeley.
