Call for papers

Contributed papers, proposals for special sessions and tool demonstrations are requested for the Fifth Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (WODES 2000), to be held in Ghent, Belgium, on 21-23 August, 2000.

Deadline for submissions: 15 January, 2000.

Aims and scopes

The interdisciplinary field of Discrete Event Systems combines methodologies and tools from control and computer science. The research activity in this field is driven by the needs of many different application areas: manufacturing, process control, supervisory control, transportation, software engineering, ... The workshop aims to provide researchers from different fields (control theoriticians and control engineers, software engineers and computer scientists) with an opportunity to exchange information and new ideas, and to discuss new developments in the field of Discrete Event Systems. Both theory and applications of Discrete Event Systems will be discussed. Earlier successful Workshops on Discrete Event Systems were held in Prague, Antibes, Edinburgh and Cagliari. The 5th WODES will be organised in Ghent, Belgium, on 21-23 August, 2000.

Venue

The workshop will take place in the conference centre "Het Pand", a historical building in the centre of Ghent, of the University of Ghent. Ghent is one of the oldest cities in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking northern part of Belgium. It is a place rich in history, architecture, culture and gastronomy. It is also very close to other interesting historical Flemish cities (Bruges, Antwerp). Links and more details are available at the Venue page. Rooms at specially reduced prices have been reserved in various hotels in Ghent. The prices range from BEF 1500 to BEF 6000 per night.

Topics

The Workshop will focus on all topics in the field of Discrete Event Systems analysis and control, including amongst others:

  • analysis tools for discrete event systems (such as perturbation analysis, (max,+)-algebra, verification tools),
  • modelling techniques (such as automata, Petri nets, process algebra),
  • computer science tools (with emphasis on hybrid systems, reactive systems, software verification and design),
  • supervisory control and real time control,
  • applications (including manufacturing systems, transportation systems, process control, software engineering, systems analysis and design)

Programme

The Workshop programme will consist of both contributed lectures (regular and short papers), invited sessions, a number of plenary invited talks and tool demonstrations, covering different topics relating the computer science and control fields to Discrete Event Systems research.

Contributions

The Scientific Programme Committee is requesting both regular and short contributed papers containing original, unpublished research results. Regular papers will be allotted 6 proceedings pages and short papers 2 pages. Authors are invited to submit by 15 January, 2000 4 copies of the complete manuscript for regular papers (max. 6 pages) or 4 copies of an extended summary for short papers (max. 4 pages) to the Workshop's address. Submission by email in postscript- or pdf-format is preferred to: wodes2000@systems.rug.ac.be. The first page must contain the title of the paper, author's name and affiliation, full address, telephone, email address, an abstract (less than 200 words) and 5 keywords. Papers will be reviewed by the Scientific Programme Committee and by external reviewers. Full versions of the accepted contributions will appear in the Proceedings of the Workshop. Style files and instructions for preparation for camera-ready copy will be available from the organisers. The Proceedings will be published by the time of the Workshop.

The Scientific Programme Committee is also requesting proposals for special sessions. Each session should be composed of between 4 and 6 papers. Session organisers should submit the papers together with a clear statement of the topic and purpose of the session, to the Workshop Secretariat by 15 January, 2000.

Contributions are also requested for tool demonstrations, covering all fields of Discrete Event Systems including for example analysis, verification and control synthesis.
